Colin Kaepernick offended millions of Americans when he refused to stand for the national anthem.
His protest was hailed in the left-wing sports media.
But now he may be paying the ultimate price for his actions.
Kaepernick is a free agent in a poor crop of quarterbacks.
And it’s a position that is always in demand.
But his play has deteriorated since leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season.
He lost his starting job before this season, and when he got a chance to play he finished just 26th in the NFL in completion percentage at 56%.
And now teams are deciding a declining quarterback who attacks America as a racist nation may not be worth the hassle.
Mike Freeman of Bleacher Reports writes:
It’s more than a week into free agency and Colin Kaepernick is still unemployed. Remember, this is a quarterback who played in the Super Bowl only four years ago, yet now it appears he can’t get a look from teams. So I set out to discover, once and for all, what teams think of the 29-year-old former Niner.
“He can still play at a high level,” one AFC general manager said. “The problem is three things are happening with him.
“First, some teams genuinely believe that he can’t play. They think he’s shot. I’d put that number around 20 percent.
“Second, some teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him. They think there might be protests or [President Donald] Trump will tweet about the team. I’d say that number is around 10 percent. Then there’s another 10 percent that has a mix of those feelings.
“Third, the rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did [kneeling for the national anthem]. They want nothing to do with him. They won’t move on. They think showing no interest is a form of punishment. I think some teams also want to use Kaepernick as a cautionary tale to stop other players in the future from doing what he did.”
Kaepernick’s protest of the national anthem offended million of Americans as well as veterans.
And multiple polls found his protest was the number one reason fans stopped watching NFL games this year.
If Kaepernick was performing at a higher level, there is a strong possibility he would have been signed to a contract.
And there are signs Kaepernick realizes how badly his chances of remaining in the NFL were damaged by his protest.
He announced that he would stand for the anthem this season.
Fans saw that as an insincere attempt to remain in the league at any cost.
