After its first full week of tracking, John Rich’s “Shut Up About Politics,” featuring Fox News’ “The Five” (Greg Gutfeld also co-wrote the new song) entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 91 and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down.
The track surged 4-1 on Country Digital Song Sales with 33,000 sold, according to Nielsen Music, and it also flies 41-17 on Hot Country Songs and has soared to the top of ITunes downloads.
And here’s why rising country music star John Rich believes his new hit song “Shut Up About Politics” resonates with a lot of people.
It’s the new “it” song of the moment because the message is all in the title, “Shut Up About Politics.” In the current American climate, it’s unfortunately hard to escape the political spectrum because most liberal entertainers feel the need to use their celebrity status to propagate their disdain towards President Trump and his administration.
That’s why Rich’s latest song is a welcoming breath of fresh air.
The country music star noted when he found about its success, “I looked up and we were literally the number one most downloaded song on any genre of music. You’ve now written a song bigger than ‘Happy Birthday,’ Greg,”
Rich added, “The thing about country music, and the reason it’s so big, a lot of times in country you’ll write songs that’ll say what everybody is thinking.”
Most notably was when disgraced former San Francisco 49ers quarterback first kneeled during the National Anthem in September 2016, but after Trump won in November, NFL players used the new kneeling movement to express their disdain towards Trump – especially after No. 45 said players shouldn’t be allowed to play if they kneel.
The CMA Award nominee also noted, “You and I were able to put into a little song how people feel about not being able to watch an award show or a game or a movie… without there constantly being some kind of political angle to it. You feel like screaming at them, ‘please shut up about politics’.”
One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the Folds of Honor charity organization.
Rich described it as; “Folds of Honor puts kids through college who lost a parent through combat. Our little song, Greg, is going to be having a serious impact in real people’s lives in this country.”
Folds of Honor will be a happy organization because if these early tracking numbers reflect how much potential this hit will be over the next months then it will generate a ton of revenue.
