The left has been entirely consumed by Trump Derangement Syndrome.
The hysteria of leftists has manifested itself in many ways, one being liberals’ hope that there’s a celebrity counterpart to Donald Trump who can become president.
Now one sports commentator just threw out a crazy name to be the Democrats’ next best hope.
The left claims to hate the idea of a giant media personality as the Commander-in-Chief, but leftists are obsessed with media and Hollywood culture.
In fact, Barack Obama was the first celebrity president. His candidacy and presidency were entirely stage-managed. Despite an indistinguishable career as a Chicago activist and freshman senator, Obama was sold as “the audacity of hope.”
The mainstream media shoved him down America’s throat with primetime special after primetime special. Even though Obama was over saturated, his past was under reported.
The media weren’t terribly interested in digging into his ties to socialism, and radical leftists like Bill Ayers, an actual domestic terrorist.
For a while, the left diverted its attention to Oprah Winfrey to be the “bringer of light” after she delivered a sanctimonious speech at the Golden Globe Awards.
Oprah lectured America on sexual misconduct that was rampant in her own industry. What made Oprah’s speech even more galling was the fact she was friends with Hollywood’s most notorious predator, Harvey Weinstein.
Despite the utter hypocrisy of the speech, an employee running NBC News’s Twitter account dubbed Oprah “Our next president”afterward.
The latest liberal icon to get the presidential treatment is NBA superstar and staunch Donald Trump critic, LeBron James.
Fox Sports 1 analyst Chris Broussard said of James:
“I think he’d be a great president…You talk about left-wing — LeBron exhibits family values. That’s very important to him because he never really had that…If he brings his family values and love of family, combined with his social awareness as far as social justice and his understanding of the importance of entrepreneurship, which he’s already building businesses, he’d be a great president in that regard.”
James first waded into politics by backing the wrong horse in 2016. James unsuccessfully campaigned for Hillary Clinton in his native state of Ohio; according to polls, Clinton’s support actually decreased after James stumped on stage with her.
After an early lead, Clinton ended up losing Ohio by nine points.
James has rebuked Trump many times, once calling him a “bum.” He also declared on behalf of other NBA players that none of them would visit the White House after the NBA Finals.
James’s Cavaliers were swept in embarrassing fashion.
The left is so desperate for a celebrity hero to “rescue” them from Trump, they’ve pegged their hopes on talk-show hosts and basketball players with seemingly no political ideology beyond regurgitating left-wing talking points.
What the left doesn’t understand is that Trump wasn’t elected because of his celebrity, he was elected because he campaigned on the issues that Americans cared about. If Trump had run as a “swampy” Republican, he wouldn’t have made it out of the primary.
Thus far, Trump has lived up to many of his promises and instituted some of the most conservative policy in decades. He cut taxes, rolled back business-killing regulation, appointed an originalist to the Supreme Court, deterred a large portion of illegal immigration, and has been hawkish on foreign policy without starting any new wars.
That’s why his supporters embrace him.
Leftists are deluding themselves if they believe LeBron James or any celebrity can garner that level of support without having an actual agenda.
