Ever since Donald Trump was elected President and news broke that Russia interfered with the election, the Democrats have desperately searched for the kill shot to get Trump impeached.
They jumped on every nugget that suggested even a whiff of impropriety, but each time left with mere crumbs.
Now the Democrats’ latest silver bullet appears to be a blank.
According to the Department of Justice, claims that Comey asked for more funding with regard to the Russia investigation are completely unfounded.
From the Washington Times:
A Justice Department spokeswoman said it is “totally false” that FBI Director James B. Comey had asked the deputy attorney general for additional resources for the Russia investigation in the days before he was fired.
The New York Times, citing three anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that Mr. Comey had met with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and asked for an increase in personnel and funding for the bureau’s ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the November presidential election.
After speaking with Mr. Rosenstein on Wednesday, DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores flatly denied The New York Times report.
She said the last time Mr. Comey and Mr. Rosenstein met was May 1 — two days before Mr. Comey publicly testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
On May 4, members of the House Intelligence Committee held a closed-door briefing to question Mr. Comey and NSA Director Adm. Mike Rogers about their probe into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Ms. Flores said one staff member for Mr. Rosenstein and one for Mr. Comey were both present during the May 1 meeting.
She declined to give a readout of the meeting, but said a request for additional resources for the Russia probe was not among the topics covered.
The Democrats’ strategy is very clear — resist everything and keep the outrage machine at full throttle. Their hope is to carry the wave of negativity into the 2018 midterm elections, reclaim the House, and impeach Trump.
The problem with this strategy is they lose credibility when they spin everything into a national crisis. Last week, Comey was persona non grata to the Democrats. This week, his firing is a grave injustice.
At some point, the Russia investigation will have to bear some fruit, otherwise the Democrats’ chief strategy goes down the drain.
The optics of the Comey firing don’t look great for Trump, but his actions aren’t in keeping with that of a guilty man. Firing Comey doesn’t stop the Russia investigation. It doesn’t even severely hamper it, especially when he’s still set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe confirmed this when he told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Comey’s ouster had zero effect on the Russia probe.
Democrats will continue to search for a silver bullet to fire at Trump’s administration. But at some point, they’re going to have to hit something.
