South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy has been a rising star since winning office in 2010.
A dogged investor, Gowdy recently made news when he suggested Susan Rice, Barack Obama’s National Security Adviser, may be subpoenaed after her refusal to testify before congress regarding the overly broad Russia-Trump investigation.
Now Gowdy’s persistence has landed him a very powerful position in congress.
The early and unexpected retirement of Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz left a vacancy for the chair of the House Oversight Committee, which Gowdy will now be filling.
From Townhall.com:
South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy has been chosen as the next chairman of the House Oversight Committee, beating out Oklahoma’s Steve Russell for the job.
Gowdy will replace outgoing Chairman Jason Chaffetz of Utah, who announced his retirement from Congress last month. Chaffetz’ last day is June 30.
“Trey Gowdy is the right person for the job. He has a long history of demanding accountability, upholding transparency, and relentlessly pursuing the truth. Under his capable leadership, the Committee will continue to work towards ensuring effectiveness and efficiency throughout the federal government. As his friend and colleague, I have every confidence in his abilities moving forward,” Chaffetz released in a statement. “The steering committee was fortunate to have two good options. I congratulate Steve Russell for throwing his hat in the ring. He has loyally served this country first in the U.S. Army, and now in his current capacity representing the people of Oklahoma. I have high expectations of the contributions he can make going forward.”
“It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as Chairman of this historic Committee. I look forward to working with Chairman-elect Gowdy to ensure a smooth transition of the gavel,” he continued.
Gowdy is a former federal prosecutor and current member of the Committee. In 2014 he was tapped to lead the House Select Committee on Benghazi. He also serves on the House Intelligence Committee, which has been investigating Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The House Republican Conference will vote on his nomination Tuesday, when his position will be made official.
The ascension of Gowdy troubles Democrats because he played a hand in Clinton’s failed presidential bid.
From Bizpac Review:
Gowdy is a bulldog who was in charge of the select committee that investigated the 2012 Benghazi attack.
An investigation that uncovered Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while Secretary of State. A finding that probably played a major role in why she isn’t the President of the United States.
The oversight committee will be in charge of investigating the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
Gowdy didn’t put his name forward for the post but was picked by the steering committee on Thursday to take over for Chaffetz, who is retiring at the end of June.
The news was met with happiness from conservatives.
Gowdy is persistent and honest, which should serve him well. The biggest insult Democrats hurl his way is that his Benghazi investigation was too thorough and spent too much money.
But since when did Democrats have problems spending other people’s money?
Perhaps it would behoove them to stop stoking the flames of the Trump- Russia collusion and get back to actual governance.
