Doesn’t it just seem like every single story needs a Hollywood movie? It doesn’t but any way the industry can profit off stories so that they can make millions at the box office works in their favor.
That happened this past Sunday night too when Rami Malek took home the golden statue for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for portraying Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, which made over two hundred million at the domestic box office.
And now this A-list actor will portray the most famous wrestler of all time in this upcoming biopic.
Biopics seem to be a dime a dozen nowadays.
Rami Malek played the iconic Freddie Mercury while Taron Egerton will play Elton John in the upcoming Rocketman – named after his hit song – biopic hitting theaters this year.
This happens in Hollywood all the time. They are clearly in desperate need of content so they dramatize living – or deceased – legends in hopes to bring home statues because when you depict a real-life person the likelihood that will happen goes up.
And that’s exactly what Hollywood is planning by casting Chris Hemsworth as the title character in the upcoming biopic about superstar hall of fame wrestler Hulk Hogan.
Directed by the same guy who helmed The Hangover series, Todd Phillips, Hemsworth is set to portray the wrestling superstar with screenwriter Scott Silver penning the script.
And it won’t hit theaters in the traditional way, it’ll apparently hit Netflix.
The Hollywood Reporter noted, “Deals for the Hogan project are in the midst of closing with Netflix. Producing will be Michael Sugar, the Academy Award winner behind Spotlight, who will produce via his Netflix-based Sugar23, and Phillips and Bradley Cooper, who will produce via their banner Joint Effort. Also producing will be Hemsworth and Eric Bischoff.”
Make no mistake; this is a big-time Hollywood movie too.
The actor who plays Thor in the Marvel movies is a box office machine nowadays, which is why he’s currently one of the biggest A-list stars in the world.
The article also noted, “One of the biggest names in wrestling of all time, Hogan was a fixture on TV sets in 1980s America as part of the World Wrestling Federation who subsequently parlayed his championships-winning leg drops and star power into forays into movies and television, endorsements and video games.”
So why is this a big deal?
He got his start in the late 1970’s in the Florida wrestling circuit and when he dominated the World Wide Wrestling Federation, he became one of the most famous people on the planet.
Hogan even had a famous matchup against “Andre the Giant” where he won his third consecutive worldwide belt in 1987.
And he might not be done with wrestling just yet.
The wrestling star just posted a picture with actor Jamie Foxx expressing their disdain for WWE’s tag team titles.
The picture and comment seemed to insinuate that both of them would be a part of the tag team title events.
Chris Hemsworth helming this role will be blockbuster entertainment for sure.
