The NBA made the choice to get overtly political.
The league and its top stars set their sights on attacking the cops.
And the NBA is paying dearly for its anti-police protest.
Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started the anti-American anthem protest in 2016, but countless sports stars have carried his torch.
One of the most notable is NBA superstar LeBron James, who suddenly became super “woke” after Kaepernick’s protest.
James suggested police officers wake up in the morning with the intent of killing black people, and he tweeted a threat at one officer who saved a girl’s life.
But the NBA’s full embrace of police protests and the Marxist Black Lives Matter movement have been a huge drag on the league.
Ratings for the playoffs are down again.
Last year’s bubble season could’ve perhaps been excused because of COVID and the 2020 election, but viewership is still down.
“TV ratings for the second round of the NBA playoffs are not doing well for the league. After the first-round numbers crashed up to 17 percent over 2018 and 2019, the semifinals appear to be doing no better…[W]ith LeBron James and the L.A. Lakers eliminated in the first round and with the semifinals continuing without them, the numbers are falling farther.”
The 2020 playoffs were also marred by the nationwide riots sparked by Black Lives Matter and Antifa extremists.
The players even boycotted playoff games after alleged rapist Jacob Blake was shot by police officers while resisting arrest and going for a knife.
The 2021 playoffs don’t have the same controversy, but viewership still hasn’t bounced back.
From Sports Media Watch:
“The Hawks-Sixers Game 2 and Clippers-Jazz Game 1 averaged 3.63 million viewers — down 18% and 41% respectively from the comparable 2019 doubleheader (Celtics-Bucks: 4.45M; Rockets-Warriors: 6.16M).”
A survey showed that NBA favorability among Republicans is under water since the beginning of 2020.
All of the leagues that have gone political have turned off Republicans, but the NBA’s over-the-top propaganda was the most damaging.
Worse yet, the political pandering didn’t attract any Democrat viewers.
Sports leagues are destroying their brands for the sake of virtue-signaling.
The NBA is suffering the “get woke, go broke” phenomenon that so many businesses are facing.
Companies are sacrificing their consumer base in the pursuit of leniency from the cancel mob.
At the end of the day, it won’t matter.
Corporations can’t be woke enough; the most radical members of the Left that companies are attempting to appease despise free markets and big business.
Many mainstream Democrats haven’t yet figured out that radical leftists are not their allies.
This miscalculation has allowed the fringes of the Left to take over the Democrat Party.
Now institutions like the NBA are struggling because of the culture war happening.
Sports fans just want to be entertained.
They don’t care what the players think about politics.
