Hollywood has been sermonizing to the rest of the country for years.
The American people are getting fed up with it, and they’re tuning out.
Now the Academy Awards just got some devastating news about their ratings.
Hollywood celebrities are often the early adopters of left-wing fads that come from “woke” university departments and newsrooms, then they shove those ideas down Americans’ throats.
But people are getting sick of the finger-wagging and virtue-signaling.
The virtual Academy Awards recently took place at Union Station in Los Angeles, and the ratings were abysmal.
The total number of viewers dropped from 23.6 million in 2020—a record low—to a paltry 9.85 million this year.
From The Wrap:
“Those initial numbers for the 2021 awards show, which was taped at Union Station in Los Angeles and aired live on ABC from 8-11:17 p.m. ET, represent a decline of 64% in the key demo and 58% in overall viewers compared to 2020’s results…”
That is an unmitigated ratings disaster.
The 2021 show didn’t have the usual pomp and circumstance because of burdensome COVID-19 restrictions, but a decline to under 10 million viewers is unthinkable.
It also didn’t help that the films nominated were a cornucopia of wokeness.
Some of the Best Picture nominees included two separate hagiographies about militant Black Panther leaders, a film about discrimination against Korean immigrants, and a ridiculous #MeToo fever dream.
If that weren’t bad enough, the entire spectacle was made even more hypocritical because authorities in Los Angeles booted the homeless from Union Station in order to put on the production.
A man in the area told FOX 11 in Los Angeles, “They came to us about a week ago saying that we had to move by Friday 6 p.m. because they were trying to clean up for the Oscars…They told us if we didn’t move, they were gonna just demolish our stuff.”
These are the same “compassionate” liberals that have allowed homelessness to become an epidemic in Los Angeles and other deep-blue cities.
That won’t stop any left-wing celebrities from scolding other Americans for not being as enlightened and empathic as they are.
Hollywood has lost any semblance of moral legitimacy.
The industry promotes and accepts debauchery, and it defends predators like Harvey Weinstein until their misconduct is too big to ignore.
Meanwhile, the product Hollywood puts out does not resonate with the American people.
Popular films used to be considered the best films.
Now the “best” films, the films loved by the critics, largely do not connect with audiences.
The stories have either become too niche or too propagandistic.
There are still talented filmmakers and performers in the industry, but the “woke” gatekeepers are insistent on pushing a particular narrative, and the art is suffering.
Hollywood is creating a massive opportunity for conservatives and apolitical storytellers to fill the entertainment void.
