It’s one of the most impressive runs that we’ve ever seen on “Jeopardy!”
James Holzhauer, who just scored his 22nd win on Friday, isn’t just blowing the doors off the competition; he’s obliterating his opponents while breaking almost every record the game show has ever had.
But James Holzhauer revealed something shocking about “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek about his actions off camera.
It’s without a doubt the most impressive run by any contestant on any game show of all time that’s reminiscent of Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show” which was inspired by a true story.
In his first week, Holzhauer became the first player to win more than $100,000 in a single episode with $110,914. But it didn’t take long for him to break his own record because on April 17th, Holzhauer won $131,127.
Friday marked his 22nd straight consecutive win with a total winnings of $1,691,008 which is more than half way to Ken Jennings all-time record win of $2,522,700, but he made that amount in 75 straight episodes. It’s inevitable Holzhauer will break Jennings record if he can keep the streak going.
But do you ever wonder what happens on the set of “Jeopardy!” when the cameras aren’t rolling?
Holzhauer gave an interview recently to a student newspaper for Shaler Area Middle School in Pennsylvania because he supports “student journalism,” where he claimed something a little shocking about host Alex Trebek’s behavior when they’re not filming.
Apparently, Trebek has a potty mouth.
The “Jeopardy!” contestant said, “I learned that Alex Trebek has a potty mouth once the cameras aren’t recording.”
Trebek recently announced that he had pancreatic cancer.
The 78-year-old gave an emotional speech that shook many Americans because he’s been a staple on television for more than 30 years.
He even spoke at the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s PurpleStride walk in Los Angeles a couple of months after he announced his diagnosis, where he said, “As you all know, survivorship is measured starting by the date you are diagnosed with cancer. And on that scale, my gosh, I’m a 62-day survivor. I promise you this, if I become a 22-year survivor, you will all be welcome at my 100th birthday.”
Who knows if Trebek always had a “potty mouth” as Holzhauer claimed but it could be due to the depression induced by his recent diagnosis.
In a recent interview on “Good Morning America,” Trebek revealed that the chemotherapy has brought deep sadness to him.
He told Robin Roberts, “I’ve had kidney stones, I’ve had ruptured discs, so I’m used to dealing with pain, but what I’m not used to dealing with is the surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness — and it brings tears to my eyes.”
And the “Jeopardy!” host concluded, “Chemo takes it out of you. I mean, I feel so weak all the time, and that’s not a good place to be.”
It wouldn’t be presumptuous that the reason why he curses when the cameras aren’t rolling is because of the pain he’s going through. Also, in thirty-plus years we’ve never heard any contestant say anything of the sort about Trebek when the cameras aren’t rolling.
Most people in his position would probably retire, especially when you consider how wealthy he is with over three decades of television money, but Trebek clearly loves his job. He gets a pass for whatever language he uses considering his situation.
