To say British comic Ricky Gervais was on fire when he gave his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel on Sunday night would be a massive understatement.
Gervais ripped Hollywood right to their faces like nobody has ever done so before.
And while doing so, Ricky Gervais blew up a sex scandal that links Bill Clinton to Hollywood.
Hollywood elitists had starry eyes, big fake grins, while clutching their pearls as they headed into the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel on Sunday night. But they had no idea what they were in for when they entered the extravagant ballroom.
It was supposed to be a pleasant night where the filmmakers of some of the year’s best films and television shows were crossing their fingers hoping to hear their name called when the envelope was opened.
Tom Hanks was to receive The Cecil B. Demille Award and Ellen DeGeneres would receive The Carol Burnett Award for achievement in television comedy.
The night was going to be magnanimous for them. And then Ricky Gervais took the stage.
Gervais’ opening 8-minute monologue was electric. After seeing the reactions of the celebrities’ faces in the audience during his hilarious jokes, you would’ve thought someone set off a gigantic stink bomb or someone launched a warhead directly at them.
They were disgusted and unamused. “How dare he make fun of me?”
But there was one particular moment, the joke of the night, that Hollywood elitists groaned at, which was when Gervais blew up a sex scandal that linked former President Bill Clinton to everybody in that room.
The British standup plugged his Netflix show “After Life” and talked about how the concept was about a man who loses his dog and struggles with wanting to kill himself, but then he jokes, “Season two is on the way, so in the end, he obviously didn’t kill himself… just like Jeffrey Epstein.”
There were a few laughs but most of the Hollywood elitists in that ballroom booed him.
Gervais cut them off, “Shut up. I know he’s your friend, but I don’t care.” It cut to some faces in the audience like Cate Blanchett who had her eyes closed. Actor Adam Driver, who is rather new to the industry by most comparisons, looked to be chuckling at the joke, but for the most part, people were angry.
Here’s the clip of the joke:

We all know the story by now, which is convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein who was on trial for more charges was found dead in his cell and was initially ruled a suicide.
But nobody believed that. The footage went missing. Guards couldn’t be accounted for in the moments leading up to his death. And independent autopsies ruled it was a homicide.
His murder was surprisingly a bipartisan agreement and some awfully powerful people like former President Bill Clinton and Duke of York Prince Andrew weren’t just buddies of Epstein. There were also travel logs with their names on it where they allegedly had parties on his private island with numerous underaged girls at his guests’ disposal.
Some Hollywood names were rumored to be friends of Epstein’s as well.
And if you’re thinking that it was never proven his Hollywood friends were a part of his accused statutory rape then listen to the reaction of the room.
They were actually upset with Gervais for making that joke. Why? For what reason would they possibly be upset?
That really should tell you all you need to know about how Hollywood felt about the convicted sexual deviant, Jeffrey Epstein.
