The United States women’s national team is on a roll in the World Cup and on Sunday night they’ll face off against the Netherlands for the gold medal and for the championship of the world.
This USWNT is so good they’ve only given up a total of three goals throughout six games thus far and they’ve never trailed at any moment during the whole tournament. Of course, this makes some non-Americans furious and the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail even audaciously claimed the U.S. women would lose against England because our team was loaded with a bunch of complacent multimillionaire players.
And famous British journalist Piers Morgan also boarded that bandwagon and had an epic meltdown after England lost to the United States on Tuesday afternoon.
The United States women’s national team continued on their epic run through the World Cup when they faced off against England in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The final score was 2-1 and now the United States will face off against the Netherlands for the 2019 World Cup championship, while England will face Sweden for the Bronze medal.
And what was shocking is they did it without the USWNT captain, Megan Rapinoe, in which news broke just about an hour before the match that she would not be starting in the match against England. It was a bit of a head-scratcher. Was she hurt? Was it for disciplinary reasons? Nobody knew but a spokesperson for the team said coach Jill Ellis would address it after the game.
Many speculated it could’ve been because of Rapinoe’s divisive attitude towards President Trump’s administration that caused her benching by Ellis. But after the game, we would later learn the captain who scored the USA’s last four goals in a row had a hamstring issue.
Nevertheless, the USWNT defeated England without the star forward.
Enter Piers Morgan. You might remember Morgan replacing Larry King after he retired in 2011 with a show on CNN called “Piers Morgan Live,” but it was canceled a few years later and he also won the U.S. celebrity version of “The Apprentice” in 2008.
On Tuesday he was a bit furious before and after the game. He made a $1000 bet on England to beat the United States and was talking trash about our women on Twitter.
He started the game with this tweet:
Let’s go you @Lionesses.
Eat them alive. 👊#ENGvUSA #WWC19 pic.twitter.com/WCvLtK8Ium— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 2, 2019
Before long, the USWNT scored the first goal with a header from Rapinoe’s replacement.
Not long after that, England tied the game.
And not long after that, America was up 2-1 with a header from Captain Alex Morgan. During her celebration, Alex Morgan caused quite a controversial stir when she pretended to sip tea, effectively poking fun at England’s obsession with drinking it, but many confused it for her smoking marijuana instead.
Piers Morgan was one of those people.

And then he had an idea what England should do during a celebration if they scored again (they did not).
When we win this, I hope every one of our players feigns eating a Big Mac and large fries. https://t.co/nNbZ6QI1mW

And he still held out hope during the final stretch of the game.
Come on @Lionesses – make these cocky yanks choke on it. pic.twitter.com/lOybEhNRGT

After the game, he was big mad.
😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 2, 2019
Piers Morgan just couldn’t quite get over it. Especially after one of England’s goals was called back because the scorer was offsides.
This is seriously testing my love of America. pic.twitter.com/1oZbaP1qvH

Finally, he got to the last stage of grief: acceptance.
*NEW COLUMN*
The USA women’s soccer team are a bunch of brash, cocky, taunting prima donnas – but these brilliant, ruthless winners also walk the talk, so I reluctantly raise my tea-drinking pinky finger & salute them. https://t.co/eW6PnuxrnR pic.twitter.com/8iuHa4hZPa— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 3, 2019
That’s the Piers Morgan story.
