The NFL has been terrible at avoiding scandals in recent years.
The anti-American anthem protests were particularly damaging for the league.
Now one NFL owner could be on his way out for a shocking reason.
Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder is skating on thin ice.
There appears to be a concerted effort to remove him as owner of the team.
A sweeping investigation into sexual harassment and misconduct within the organization has hounded Snyder for years, and it still has not gone away.
And The Washington Post wrote a piece suggesting that fellow owners may want Snyder out.
From The Post:
“Sentiments among NFL team owners regarding Daniel Snyder’s ownership of the Washington Commanders have shifted significantly, as they await the findings of both a congressional investigation and a league-commissioned probe into allegations of misconduct by him and his team. Multiple owners said in recent days that they believe serious consideration may be given to attempting to oust Snyder from the league’s ownership ranks, either by convincing him to sell his franchise or by voting to remove him.”
The congressional investigation into Snyder is nothing more than a political hit because Snyder is a Republican in the Democratic stronghold of Washington, D.C.
Snyder was already strong-armed into changing the franchise name from Redskins to Commanders amid unrelenting pressure.
Far-left activists had been pushing for a name change for years, but the dam finally broke when major corporations went “woke” and started throwing their muscle behind the cause.
The Post continued:
“While no action is imminent, the comments reflect a growing level of frustration among the owners over the controversies that have engulfed Snyder and the Commanders and the team’s financial performance under his ownership, including its inability to secure public financing for a new stadium. As recently as a few months ago, several owners expressed wariness about such an attempt at ousting him, in part because of the prospect of Snyder responding with legal action. One owner this week was particularly forceful, saying the initial effort could involve urging Snyder to sell the team voluntarily…If Snyder could not be persuaded to do so willingly, NFL rules would require a vote of at least 24 of the 32 owners to force him to sell.”
The anonymous owner told The Post, “He needs to sell…Some of us need to go to him and tell him that he needs to sell…I think there will be a movement…We need to get 24 votes.”
Snyder certainly will not get any support from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell because there is no love lost between the two.
According to “canceled” Papa John’s Pizza founder John Schnatter, Snyder wanted Schnatter to essentially fire Goodell by going after him publicly.
Schnatter explained, “Goodell is a coward and he is incompetent and he’s just lucky. Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, Indra Nooyi with PepsiCo, and Dan Snyder all called me—several other folks—about Goodell’s conduct and the way he was handling [the anthem protests]. Jones and Dan Snyder with the Redskins wanted Goodell fired…[T]hey called me and said, ‘You need to take this guy out. You’re the number one sponsor of the league as far as notoriety and acceptance and association. Everybody loves you. They love Peyton. We hate Goodell.”
Schantter chose not to go after Goodell, and now it appears as though Goodell may get the last laugh with more pressure mounting against Snyder.
