Netflix quickly became one of the most powerful companies in Hollywood. And they briefly became the most valuable, edging out Disney for the top spot just a few short months ago. Disney always reigned supreme in Hollywood but there’s a new sheriff in town now.
Cliché notwithstanding, with great power comes great responsibility. It’s a power that they seem to take for granted by alienating a huge faction in America – President Trump and all of his loyal supporters.
And they just showed everyone with the announcement of this upcoming show they truly despise Trump.
Unfortunately, some companies are completely apathetic to common knowledge and business 101 teachings. It’s either that or they really have zero problem with losing the business, which is a real head scratcher.
That seems to be the case here though because Netflix just announced a new original series called Space Force, which will likely parody Trump’s proposed Space Force initiative – a brand new branch of the military.
And The Office star, Steve Carell, will headline the project.
Deadline reports, “The Office star Steve Carell is reuniting with the Emmy-winning series’ developer/executive Greg Daniels for a new workplace comedy at Netflix, which takes on President Donald Trump’s Space Force initiative.”
They even had a teaser of the announcement where it said, “On June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States Armed Forces. The goal of the new branch is ‘to defend satellites from attack’ and ‘perform other space-related tasks.’ Or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out.”
Netflix doesn’t really care about how this looks either. And you better believe that if the Space Force was former President Barack Obama’s idea then they wouldn’t have thought to parody it because all of the liberal God’s ideas are gold to them.
In the meantime, the streaming giant is gearing up for another massive undertaking too because they just announced they would increase the monthly subscription rate as high as eighteen percent.
Apparently, they need that extra cash to produce shows like Space Force and its reported that Carell will get a salary of more than $1 million an episode. This means that they need to charge subscribers more so that Carell can be more comfortable in his already multimillionaire lifestyle.
Netflix could very well lose a lot of subscribers in the process.
One survey conducted after the Netflix price increase was announced said, “Not surprisingly, Netflix’s rate increase has some customers thinking twice about whether or not they want to keep paying for the service. Despite only being a $1-$2 increase, a total of 27% say they are either considering canceling or will definitely cancel their service. Another 10% said they planned on downgrading to one of Netflix’s less expensive plans to offset the new rates.”
Netflix is widely known to take great care of their talent. They do this by overpaying. Why else would they pay someone like Ricky Gervais $40 million for his last standup special?
Except now it’s coming out of your pocket.
