Politics are rapidly devouring culture.
Film, television, and music have all been infused with messaging.
Now a musician won’t sing her biggest hit anymore for an insane reason.
It’s not unheard of for musicians to “retire” songs.
They just get sick of performing their biggest hit, and sometimes they don’t even like the particular song and ironically resent its runaway success.
But rock vocalist Pat Benatar revealed that she will no longer sing “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” because of gun violence.
During an interview, Benatar said, “[W]e’re not doing ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’ and fans are having a heart attack and I’m like, I’m sorry, in deference to the victims of the families of these mass shootings, I’m not singing it. I tell them, if you want to hear the song, go home and listen to it. (The title) is tongue-in-cheek, but you have to draw the line. I can’t say those words out loud with a smile on my face, I just can’t. I’m not going to go on stage and soapbox – I go to my legislators – but that’s my small contribution to protesting. I’m not going to sing it. Tough.”
This is absolutely absurd.
Nobody conflates gun violence with a benign pop song from 1980.
Will it become inappropriate to say “shoot me an email”?
Gun control has become a renewed topic of interest for the Democrats in light of the horrific shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Highland Park.
But instead of addressing the conditions that create mass shooters such as societal breakdown and the loss of community among other issues, leftists want more feckless gun laws and empty gestures like retiring pop songs.
Benatar also made an unintended confession during her interview about the lies of feminism that perpetuate to this day.
She explained, “I grew up in a really female-heavy household. So my experience was that there was no difference between men and women. When I got into the world, nothing was more shocking to me than to see that wasn’t exactly true. People were patting you on the head but they didn’t mean it; they were lying. It was infuriating.”
That is a truly fascinating statement that could be grounds for being “canceled” in a different context.
The leftist idea that men and women are exactly the same has been destructive for society.
And the logical conclusion of that idea is the radical transgender movement that argues men can become women and vice versa.
Now biological men are competing in women’s sports, and feminists have split over the issue.
Women who are not on board with that development are smeared as TERFs, trans-exclusionary radical feminists.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has become a pariah for her refusal to bow to the radical transgender mob.
