“Woke” politics have completely taken over sports.
NBA star LeBron James has become the face of that shift.
Now James won an award for one anti-Trump protest.
Sports Illustrated just released its Sportsperson of the Year Award for 2020, and it’s just as “woke” as expected.
The award went to the “Activist Athlete,” and that included James because of “his considerable energy into inspiring young people to go to the ballot box in the face of voter suppression.”
Democrats have been screeching about voter suppression in black communities for years, but it’s nonsense.
Black voter turnout rates have outpaced other demographic groups in national elections since 2008.
Democrats tried to argue that Stacey Abrams lost her gubernatorial race to Brian Kemp in 2018 to voter suppression.
They blamed polling station closures on suppression, but it was actually the handiwork of a Democratic state legislature.
Nevertheless, James’s activism is being celebrated by Sports Illustrated.
James also said that it’s “open season” on black men in America, and said some white police officers wake up with the intent of murdering a black suspect.
James has done nothing but inflame the populace and make the country worse.
Wokeism is tearing apart the country, not bringing it together.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was also honored because of his support for Black Lives Matter, a radical Marxist movement intent on tearing apart the nuclear family.
BLM and Antifa protests were responsible for dozens of deaths and untold property damage around the country for months.
Instead of covering the violent and destructive protests, the so-called mainstream media chose either to ignore them or characterize them as “mostly peaceful.”
The trend of feting woke athletes with awards doesn’t seem to be ending any time soon.
In 2019, Women’s National Soccer Team star Megan Rapinoe won the award for her far-left activism, which included fighting against the so-called gender pay gap.
Rapinoe was one of the first athletes to join Colin Kaepernick in his anti-American anthem protest.
She has also been a harsh critic of Trump and Republicans more broadly.
In 2018, the Golden State Warriors won the award as a team in large part because of their antipathy toward Trump and embrace of left-wing political positions.
Sports Illustrated wrote of the warriors:
“The current boom, too, has coincided with the increasing intersection of sports and the hard questions of politics, race and identity, among others, that have so divided the country…The Warriors—forcefully but civilly—embraced the unique platform afforded them…No, [the Warriors] did not change the world and its attendant conflicts and ills, but they did not ignore them either.”
Sports fans have repeatedly shown they are not interested in politics mixed with sports, but that’s what they continue to get over and over.
The NBA’s ratings cratered because of their over-the-top commitment to woke politics.
Considering how far left most of sports journalists are, the trend doesn’t seem like it will reverse any time soon.
