Leftist witch hunts have become the norm.
Someone can have his entire livelihood destroyed for the most harmless reason.
And a Hollywood star uttered four chilling words about cancel culture.
Progressives, particularly those that work in media, have become obsessed with “canceling” people for wrongthink.
Even liberals who virtue-signal have been put through the wringer in order to appease the mob.
Some prominent people are finally speaking out against cancel culture, and Hollywood star Johnny Depp is one of them.
Depp sat for an interview at a film festival and said that “no one is safe” from cancel culture.
Depp elaborated:
“It’s a very complex situation…This instant rush to judgment based on essentially what amounts to polluted air. It’s got so far out of hand that I can assure you, no one is safe. Not one of you, so long as someone is willing to say one thing.”
Depp, who once joked that Donald Trump should be assassinated, has found himself the target of cancelation attempts.
He was accused of “cultural appropriation,” and also convicted in the court of public opinion as a domestic abuser.
Actress girlfriend Amber Heard accused Depp of repeated physical abuse, but phone recordings showed that she was the phone who had repeatedly battered him.
Depp is currently suing publications for defamation after they besmirched his name.
Depp added:
“It takes one sentence and there’s no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. It’s not just me that this has happened to. It’s happened to a lot of people.”
Many people far less influential than Depp have experienced this.
Private citizens who went viral because of a camera phone incident have had to go into hiding after cancel mobs doxxed and harassed them.
Only the most powerful and connected seem to be able to skirt punishment, but even Hollywood megaproducer Harvey Weinstein was eventually brought to justice.
Depp concluded:
“When there’s an injustice, whether it’s against you or someone you love, or someone you believe in – stand up, don’t sit down. ‘Cause they need you.”
Unfortunately, coming to someone’s defense has been demonized as an act of complicity.
Cancel mobs are caught up in euphoric moral outrage.
The Left, which claims to care so much about empathy, want people’s lives destroyed.
And so-called activists are incentivized to be offended by some local “Karen” somewhere.
Even if Depp wins his defamation suit, there will always be a cloud hanging over him.
Some people will only remember the allegations, not that he was physically attacked by his girlfriend.
Some liberals are standing up to cancel culture, but not nearly enough.
More would rather just put their heads in the sand because they don’t want to be associated with “the other.”
Social stigmatization is powerful, and the cancel mob knows this.
That’s why they work so hard to demonize their ideological enemies.
Cancel culture won’t stop until liberals start speaking out against the insanity because the mob is already coming for them.
