The entertainment industry went insane over the past few years.
Tinseltown liberals did not cope well with the election of Donald Trump.
But Hollywood executives are beginning to panic about one thing ruining the business.
Hollywood may be finally learning the lesson of “get woke, go broke.”
Movies and television shows brimming with ham-fisted messaging and inorganic diversity, inclusivity, and equity (DIE) are not raking in audiences.
It turns out that the average fan does not like DIE propaganda, and the hard leftists that do are not numerous enough to drive ticket sales.
This was known to anyone paying attention at all, but Hollywood liberals can convince themselves of anything.
However, the string of box office failures might be too much to bear; it’s called show business for a reason.
From The New York Times:
“In hushed conversations over lunch at Toscana Brentwood and cocktails at the San Vicente Bungalows, some powerful producers and agents have started to question the commercial viability of inclusion-minded films and shows. They point to terrible ticket sales for films like ‘Bros,’ the first gay rom-com from a major studio, and ‘Easter Sunday,’ a comedy positioned as a watershed moment for Filipino representation. ‘Ms. Marvel,’ a critically adored Disney+ series about a teenage Muslim superhero, was lightly viewed, according to Nielsen’s measurements.”
Polls have shown that only 8-10% of the U.S. is “progressive,” yet this is the audience that Hollywood has been catering to for at least the past six years.
Meanwhile, an old-fashioned popcorn flick with broad appeal like Top Gun: Maverick smashed records at a time when the box office had been relatively soft.
People will still go to the movies if they’re given a reason to go.
Liberal propaganda films are not a strong enough draw to get people off the couch and headed to the movie theater.
The Times continued:
“Warner Bros. Discovery shelved ‘Batgirl,’ a nearly finished movie starring a Latina actress, featuring a transgender actress in a supporting role, written by a woman, produced by women and directed by two Muslim men. Warner Bros. Discovery never publicly explained its decision, but signaled that it found ‘Batgirl’ to be creatively lacking.”
By all accounts, Batgirl was a “woke” mess and the studio chose to eat the $90 million budget instead of spending the money to market it only for it to be a critical and financial flop.
This has been brewing for a while with many inside Hollywood quietly grumbling about the problem of wokeness.
Some have even gone on the record.
Hawk Koch, producer and former president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences, said, “I’m all for LGBT and Native Americans, blacks, females, whatever minorities that have not been served correctly in the making of content, whether it’s television or movies or whatever, but I think it’s gone too far. I know a lot of very talented people that can’t get work because they’re not black, Native American, female or LGBTQ.”
The DIE religion is causing a stir both in front of and behind the camera.
And the bad box office results could be leading to a course correction.
