Cancel culture is coming for everyone.
Not even people on the left are safe.
And one famed liberal host is furious after one pro-Trump actress got fired.
“Real Time” host Bill Maher is sick and tired of the woke mob “canceling” people for saying (or not saying) or doing (or not doing) the perfectly progressive thing in the present as well as the past.
Maher, a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, defended actress Gina Carano after she was fired by Disney for expressing un-woke views.
Carano stood up to the transgender mob that tried to bully her into putting gender pronouns in her bio; she said the election process should be fortified, casting doubt on Joe Biden’s victory; Carano also spoke out against the COVID-19 mask hysteria.
Disney was so furious with Carano that they scrapped a spinoff show that had been in the works for her.
The final straw was when Carano posted a benign message on Instagram that called for comity among neighbors.
Maher used his closing monologue to rail against the cancel culture being propped up by the left.
He said, “Everybody hates [political correctness] and no one stands up to it…Because it’s always the safe thing to swallow what you really think and just join the mob.”
Maher previously hosted “Politically Incorrect” on ABC, so he’s an old school liberal that still believes in free speech.
“[Cancel culture is] real, it’s insane and it’s growing exponentially. And it’s coming to a neighborhood near you. If you think it’s just for celebrities, no. In an era when everyone is online, everyone is a public figure.”
Social media has served as an accelerant for the outrage mobs that roam the digital streets in search of prey.
“[Carano] made some Nazi analogy. Who doesn’t these days? ’You’re like the Nazis’ is the new ‘I don’t like you.’ It’s always okay when Trump’s the Nazi…By the way, you can’t work in Hollywood if you don’t believe what we believe? Yeah, in the ’50s, that’s exactly what the left complained they were being told.”
His analogy is apt; the left acts as if McCarthyism was the worst thing that ever happened, yet they engage in it on a daily basis.
A public relations rep recently said that Hollywood clients live in fear of cancelation, and post messages on social media in order to appease the cultural left.
The problem won’t be solved until more liberals like Maher step up to the plate.
Right now, the fight against cancel culture is being fought almost exclusively by conservatives and Republicans.
Until the majority of the left that’s been cowed into silence realizes that the mob will eventually come for them, the problem is only going to persist.
Carano and “The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison won’t be the last celebrities to get thrown on the pyre.
The cancelations will continue apace until the majority stands up and pushes back.
