Abercrombie & Fitch has been an American clothing line since 1892.
Founded by David T. Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch in Manhattan 127 years ago, it has been a staple in American malls for the past several decades.
Abercrombie & Fitch just made a huge mistake by hiring this Trump-hating athlete.
The United States women’s national team achieved worldwide fame after they won last year’s World Cup. That fame was due to how insufferably cocky all the players were.
They over-celebrated in blow out defeats, stirring controversy with their political rhetoric and mocking their opponents with the gestures they made after scoring. In particular, it was Megan Rapinoe who became an overnight household name.
And while millions of Americans hailed their success for a seemingly never-ending week following their win, you haven’t heard much about them recently.
But when Abercrombie & Fitch announced that Megan Rapinoe would represent the renowned clothing line for an advertising campaign, it was a shock.
The Women’s World Cup winner is one of 24 stars featured in the fashion company’s “Face Your Fierce” ad campaign, which also features Lakers star Kyle Kuzma, Olympic skier and advocate Gus Kenworthy, Paralympian champion Scout Bassett, and others.
Rapinoe sat down with People Magazine to discuss the new venture saying, “I jumped at it right away. I mean, what a cool opportunity to be part of a big brand and a big national campaign with the lineup that they have,” Rapinoe told the magazine. “My high school self is like, ‘Oh my God, this is insane.’
Abercrombie & Fitch was an incredibly popular brand in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s amongst high school kids across the nation. It was the more expensive version of American Eagle, or American Outfitters.
She added, “It’s cool also to be able to get out of the sports world. I always jump at the opportunities to do something different and challenge myself and sort of get myself in a different realm. So, this is exciting for me. We didn’t even have an Abercrombie store in my town [growing up] — we had to go to a mall in a bigger town. It totally brings me back to my younger days.”
She also called the ad campaign “fierce,” explaining, “Fierce, to me, means just being who you are and feeling confident in being that person. And I feel very lucky to have people around me in the family who really support me and make me feel it’s good to be that way.”
But why tarnish the legacy of this American retailer by employing someone who has said some unpleasant and aggressive comments about President Trump?
It all started when captain Megan Rapinoe brought all of this notoriety to the team first with her “I’m not going to the f—king White House,” comment while also refusing to sing during the National Anthem.
Rapinoe opted not to sing instead of kneeling during the National Anthem, which she’s done multiple times in “solidarity” with former quarterback Colin Kaepernick during games in the National Women’s Soccer League.
However, many people have Kaepernick fatigue, which is why the publicity stunt of his workout, orchestrated alongside the NFL, was actually just a joke.
Only 7 teams actually sent representatives to view his workout and while his attorney, Mark Geragos, claimed that several teams were interested, he’s still not on a roster.
Maybe Rapinoe is older now and likely won’t return for the USWNT when they play in the next World Cup. That means she’ll soon be facing the end of her career and gigs like this are her last hope at relevancy.
