Christianity is under attack.
And it’s not just here in America but throughout the world.
Now Hollywood is taking up the mantle and blatantly attacking Christianity.
The new Darren Aronofsky film mother! was just released to abysmal critic reviews and possibly even worse audience reviews.
And the main reason why was the allegory to Christianity and the cruel message in the end about humanity.
(Spoilers Alert!)
Jennifer Lawrence’s character represents Mother Nature (get it?!) or a personification of the Earth itself. Her husband played by Javier Bardem, “Him”, is a struggling writer who is supposed to represent God.
Suddenly, they get an uninvited visit from “Man” played by Ed Harris who is supposed to be Adam and is clearly dying, he is also an enormous fan of Him’s work, ie The Old Testament. Soon to follow is “Woman”, the Man’s wife, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. You probably guessed correctly that she’s obviously Eve.
Then their kids show up played by Brian and Domhnall Gleeson and they are supposed to be Cain and Abel. Cain kills Abel because of favoritism, just like in the Scripture.
A funeral is held for Abel in their house, and Mother wants nothing to do with the disrespectful guests who trash her house, or “Earth.” Yes, very pro-environment and anti-humanity.
Mother loses her mind and kicks everyone out, which is presumably supposed to signify the great flood.
This is when Him, the struggling writer, suddenly has a wave of ideas, which is supposed to be The New Testament. And suddenly Mother becomes pregnant. You can probably guess whom she’s pregnant with by now.
Then there is a lull in the movie to signify the time between the Old and New Testaments.
And people come from all over to give Him praise, which Him loves. It’s as if the movie is saying God cherishes the celebrity aspect of his creation.
People come from all over with torches, destroy the house out of obsession, and once the baby is born they do one of the most obscenely violent things to “Jesus” that has ever been put onto film.
And God is okay with it.
The movie is harrowing, but the message is grotesque and offensive.
Yet, Paramount Pictures defended Aronofsky’s project.
Breitbart reports:
“Paramount Pictures is defending its latest release, the Jennifer Lawrence-starring horror pic mother!, after the film underperformed at the box office and earned a rare “F” CinemaScore from moviegoers over the weekend.
mother! boasted a cast including double Oscar-winner Lawrence, Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, and was directed by Oscar nominee Darren Aronofsky.
But the bizarre horror film polarized audiences upon its release last weekend, as audiences slapped it with an “F” CinemaScore, one of only 19 times a film has earned that dubious designation.
Critics liked the film better, giving mother! a 68% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
But the $30 million film still only managed to take in around $8 million during its opening weekend, marking it the worst wide release opening in Lawrence’s career.
“This movie is very audacious and brave,” Megan Collison, Paramount’s worldwide president of marketing and distribution, told the Hollywood Reporter in defending the film this week.
“You are talking about a director at the top of his game, an actress at the top of her game. They made a movie that was intended to be bold. Everyone wants original filmmaking, and everyone celebrates Netflix when they tell a story no one else wants to tell.
This is our version. We don’t want all movies to be safe. And it’s okay if some people don’t like it.”
Aronofsky was the same director of Noah with Russell Crowe, so this is quite a violent shift in tone since his last film.
